Ironman swim

Post by kc on Fri Jul 09, 2010 11:52 pm

Was just looking at the post in chat about the non wet suit swim and had a little laugh because I checked earlier in the week and it was only 21.9 wassertempreture , but I checked today and it is 24.1 today. According to the Ironman website 24.5 is the cut off point. We need to drop a Glacier or something in there on Saturday night. So its back to the pool for me.

If we had a giant spoon, we could stir up some of the colder stuff from the bottom...

just found this on some random forum

""Re: Ironman Switzerland 2010

I emailed IMCH yesterday and got the below response:

"Unfortunately at the moment we don’t know if wetsuit are allowed or not.

Neoprene wetsuits are only permitted if the water temperature is below 24.5° Centigrade (76.1° Fahrenheit). If the water temperature is below 16° Centigrade (60.8° Fahrenheit), the wearing of a neoprene wetsuit is mandatory. The water temperature will be measured at a depth of 50 cm below the surface of the water on race day at 6 a.m. and the temperature publicized immediately. Compression stockings which cover feet are not permitted during swimming.

We are looking forward to seeing you soon at the Ironman Zurich Switzerland 2010".

So I guess that means we find out on the morning. Temps for the next few days are forecast to be over 30 in Zurich so I wouldn't bet against it being non wetsuit. Having said that, if it carries on being over 30, then I'm guessing the 'non wetsuit' swim will be the least of our problems!!!!""

I googled it myself and found the WTU rules (whoever they are) and it says what you say but it says that below 28.8 you may wear a wetsuit but you cant win a prize , which wont worry me but the big question is how hot would you be in a wetsuit in 28 degree water for over an hour and what about the rcycle and run after with a big red head on ye.

Slightly off topic (but this is the most current post on the race) but I found a lovely race report from last year...gives you a good idea of what its all about (from a female who did 14hrs but she's quite detailed...)

It seems to be getting warmer! Laughing

Looking at the graph, it was 23.9 at 6am & 9am this morn but is now 24.7 degrees...over the allowed level for wetsuits! Based on this morn temp. ye will be ok but it looks to be getting warmer each day...

Air temp at the moment is 27.8.

Its great that our club mates are taking so much joy in the wet suit issue! This is a post this morning from a local guy from the same tread on tritalk that steve quoted:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Regarding the swim in 08 it was in the 30s and although it changed on race day the organisers managed to find a cold bit of the lake.

Also I read somewhere that ironman germany was the first non wetsuit ironman in europe

the weather forecast is looking a bit cooler anyway.

Failing that I'm not too proud to do the breast stroke for a bit Very Happy
